Signal Diagnostic is a live screen — not a one-shot snapshot. Open it and watch Forager’s radios and sensors update in real time: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals, a dark-mode map of your position, a 0–100 uniqueness score, spectrum congestion, and live sensor readings. When you’re ready to hand off evidence, export a self-contained HTML report. It is intended for demonstrations and troubleshooting, not routine scanning, and it does not write a confirmation record — it has no effect on attestation history or CMDB data.

When to use it

  • Location is stuck on “Locating…” — Open Signal Diagnostic to see whether the phone is detecting signals at all. No signals means a radio or permissions problem. Signals present but wrong room means a survey issue.
  • Wrong room detected consistently — The app keeps placing a tech in a neighboring room. Watch which signals are dominant and whether re-surveying will resolve it.
  • Before contacting support — Tech has a reproducible location problem. They export a snapshot and attach the HTML file to their support email. Support can diagnose the issue remotely without needing to be on site.
  • Verifying radio health before a survey — Before walking a full floor survey, confirm both Wi-Fi and BLE signals are present and the uniqueness score is reasonable. If BLE shows nothing, there’s a permissions or hardware issue to fix first.
  • Sales demos — Show a prospect exactly what Forager detects in their building in real time, live on screen, before they commit to a deployment.
  • Coverage spot-check after a re-survey — Confirm a newly surveyed room shows a strong, stable signal environment before marking it complete.

Opening the live screen

From the home screen, tap the Signal Diagnostic quick action. The live screen opens immediately — there is no confirmation sheet or setup step. Radios, GPS, and sensors start updating as soon as the screen appears.

What Wi-Fi vs. BLE update speed to expect

Wi-Fi AP counts step every ~15–30 seconds — that’s Android’s OS-level scan throttling, not a bug. BLE updates continuously and carries the live “something changed” feeling as you move through a space.

The uniqueness score

A deterministic 0–100 score summarizing how distinctive — and how reliable — the current signal environment is. It’s weighted so the number can be defended in front of a prospect: A higher score means a room is easier to fingerprint reliably. A low, flat score during a survey is a sign to gather more signal history (stay on screen longer) or that the space itself is sparse and may need denser BLE coverage.

Exporting a report

Tap the Export floating action button. The button shows a spinner while the report is generated (1–2 seconds), then the Android share sheet opens. Send the report via email, messaging, or save it to Files — it’s a self-contained HTML file, no internet connection needed to view it. The exported report includes:
  • Score badge — the uniqueness score at the moment of export
  • Room block — current room and confidence, or LOCATING… if the space hasn’t been surveyed
  • Map section — the same Stadia dark map, embedded as a static image
  • Congestion chart — the per-channel spectrum breakdown
  • Classification table — device counts by category (Infrastructure, Printer, Mobile, Beacon, IoT, Unknown)
  • Per-signal table with Session stability columns — first-seen time, min/max RSSI, sample count, and stability for every signal tracked during the session
  • Raw data — full JSON payload with a copy button
Reports are generated from the live signal state at the moment you tap Export. They are not stored in Forager or synced to the dashboard. Save or send the report immediately — it will not be retrievable later.

GPS and permission fallbacks

Signal Diagnostic is built to stay useful even when a radio or permission is missing:
  • Location permission denied — the map hero collapses to a “GPS unavailable — indoor mode” strip. Wi-Fi, BLE, sensors, the uniqueness score, and export all continue to work normally.
  • Airplane mode / no Wi-Fi — the screen runs on BLE alone. This is expected and won’t crash the screen; Wi-Fi-dependent stats (AP count, band diversity) simply read low or zero.
A diagnostic report captured during a fallback state is still useful evidence when filing a support request — it shows exactly what signals were present and why classification struggled.

Away from surveyed sites

Forager checks your GPS fix against the locations of your company’s surveyed sites. If you’re not near any of them (for example, demonstrating the app at another organization’s building), room matching is switched off automatically — the dashboard simply won’t name a room, and an exported report shows the radio-environment capture without a room match. This prevents the app from displaying a confidently wrong room name from your own sites. Room matching resumes automatically when you’re back within range of a surveyed site.
